Lindsay's Review

In children's literature it's rare to find a novel that explores a pre-historic world in such a vivid and accessible way. The novel’s clear and explanatory writing immerses the reader in the paleolithic world of German forests where the youth Torak is struggling to survive after his father is killed by a rogue "demon” bear on a hunting trip. Left to his own devices, Torak must use his wits and his knowledge of hunting and gathering not only to survive but also to complete a mission to save his tribe from the "demon” bear. Along with a wolf pup that he adopts, and using his developing powers of communing with nature, he faces the perils with great courage and audacity.

This book is not only a romping good read that lets children explore the deep past; it also highlights the journey of “coming of age” through the development of the main character’s courage, instinct and independence. In a fun and gripping way, the story shows how trust in oneself and self-sacrifice for the good of the community have been fundamentally part of humanity since the beginning of time. These adventures allow children to explore a range of difficult situations and emotions outside the modern urban environment in the safety of their home. It will also open their eyes to the natural world around them. Because Wolf Brother is the first in a series of five books, there is plenty of scope for more adventures set in the distant past, while also providing some useful tips on forest lore and survival. Thoroughly recommended for children from the age of 9. Fun for parents to read and discuss later with the kids, or even read to younger kid.

Publishers Reviews

The first, bestselling novel in the million-copy-selling CHRONICLES OF ANCIENT DARKNESS series, WOLF BROTHER is a compelling page-turner like no other written by renowned author Michelle Paver.

Thousands of years ago, the land is one dark forest. Its people are hunter-gatherers. They know every tree and herb and they know how to survive in a time of enchantment and powerful magic. Until an ambitious and malevolent force conjures a demon: a demon so evil that it can be contained only in the body of a ferocious bear that will slay everything it sees, a demon determined to destroy the world.

Only one boy can stop it - 12-year-old Torak, who has seen his father murdered by the bear. With his dying breath, Torak's father tells his son of his burden. He must lead the bear to the mountain of the World Spirit and beg that spirit's help to overcome it.

A terrifying quest in a world of wolves, tree spirits and Hidden People, a world in which trusting a friend means risking your life.
